Birthplace of Coffee

Birthplace of Coffee

Ethiopia is where coffee was first discovered — in the Kaffa region around 850 AD. Legend says a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats dancing with energy after eating red berries. Those berries were coffee. Today, Ethiopia is one of the world's top producers, and the traditional coffee ceremony (Buna) remains a cornerstone of Ethiopian hospitality.

13 Months of Sunshine

Ethiopia follows the Ge'ez calendar — 13 months of sunshine, as the tourism slogan goes. Twelve months have 30 days each, and a 13th month has just 5 or 6 days. The calendar runs about 7–8 years behind the Gregorian calendar. Ethiopian New Year, Enkutatash, falls in September and is celebrated with fresh flowers and joyful song.

Never Colonized

Ethiopia is the only African nation to successfully resist European colonization, defeating Italy at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. This historic victory inspired independence movements across the entire continent and made Ethiopia a symbol of African freedom and dignity. Emperor Haile Selassie later became a founding figure of the African Union.

The system has 33 base characters, each appearing in 7 vowel forms, producing 231 unique characters. It is the official writing system for Amharic, Tigrinya, and other Ethiopian languages.

The Mesob Tradition

A mesob is the traditional woven basket-table at the heart of Ethiopian dining — and the namesake of our restaurant. Colorfully handwoven from straw and decorated with intricate patterns, families gather around it to share injera and stews together. The mesob symbolizes togetherness, community, and the Ethiopian spirit of communal eating.

Teff: The Ancient Superfood

Teff is a tiny grain native to Ethiopia and has been cultivated for over 3,000 years. It is the key ingredient in injera, Ethiopia's staple flatbread. Naturally gluten-free and packed with iron, calcium, and protein, teff is so small that 150 grains weigh the same as a single wheat grain — yet it carries far more nutrition per serving.
